But I have given it a REALLY good try. And guess what? I love it. At first I thought my fit was ALL wrong. I couldn't get the back to connect with the front. I went on diaperswappers.com and a great group of people helped me realize the back wasn't high enough. So now, I gotta tell you, although my prefolds are normally my "use only if the world is crashing down and you are out of colorful AIOs, AI2s, Pockets, and Fitteds", I now want SO BADLY to reach for the prefolds. There is something fun in folding it and seeing how each time I get a little better. My friend at Mama Mel Crafts wrote an awesome post to help me figure out how to actually prep mine to get them fluffy.
And now for the kicker....Kim at Dirty Diaper Laundry knows just how to push me at the right time. In response to a terribly sad article about people using soiled disposables, she issued a challenge for people to use flats exclusively for a week (May 23-30). Guess what? I'm in. I am scared out of my mind, but I am in. I looked at youtube videos and HOLY MOLY the folding scares me. But...I'm in.
What about you? Are you afraid of prefolds and flats? Do you share my fear of having to do put one of these on, contactless, in the dark, in the middle of the night? What are your thoughts on prefolds?
Oh and one other question. Thanks to Little Boppers and Softbums, I am now addicted to soft stuff like bamboo and velour on my babies' tushies. Do prefolds/flats come like this? What other prefolds/flats should I put here on Padded Tush Stats? Educate me!
I am totally unafraid of prefolds. They make up half my stash. I was terrified of them when I started researching cloth while pregnant with my second. I originally intended to do nothing but pockets with my ds. Then I did more research. And I discovered that OS pockets wouldn't fit my newbie right away. Crap. I had a VERY VERY limited budget. A gift of 150 dollars to get EVERYTHING. I would not be able to acquire more money for 3 months after my ds was born. Prefolds really were my only choice. And I totally fell in love with them. And yes, you can get bamboo and hemp prefolds but I don't know if they make them in velour. I personally can't afford the price of the alternative fabric prefolds so haven't dived too far into them. I do however LOVE my Imagine prefolds from Nicki's Diapers. They're an affordable alternative to the prefolds sold over at GMD that were out of my price range. So PLEASE, will you do a survey on them? I've been dying to do so LOL
ReplyDeleteThanks Julie! That is such great information! I just posted surveys for the Imagines.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, on a sidenote. I think I am officially in love with prefolds. HOW did I figure that out? Well, I couldn't find my one and only snappi so I DUG THROUGH my wet bag to find it. EWE!
I started with prefolds.... and gradually rewarded myself with fancier dipes. It's like driving a stick shift..... If you don't learn it first, after experiencing an automatic, you'll never have the motivation to go back and learn the manual. I did the same thing to myself with diapers. Start with the hard ones so I force myself to be comfortable with them. Now, I actually prefer a stick shift as well as prefolds and flats. Yay!
ReplyDeleteI'm using flannel receiving blankets as flats right now...youtube showed me all the ways of folding and I love folding them. I use good ol'fashion diaper pins w/them and could easily do a wk w/only flats because its all I got anyways...the hard part is I only have one cover to work with :(
ReplyDeleteI'm going to take the challenge too! However, I seem to be challenged so far in the snappi department. I've just been folding and laying in a cover. That's the way to go for me!
ReplyDeleteIf you love prefolds you should try the extended tab versions like Meg a Roos. I am in love!
ReplyDeleteThanks for joining the challenge!
I don't even know any special folds for the flats. I just fold it into a rectangle and roll on the sides and front before snappi-ing!
