Flat Fold Invention Competition

Are you enjoying all of the flat craze going on right now? Well guess, what, Padded Tush Stats is going to feed it.

Zabi Baby Bamboo Flat Diapers

We are going to have a flat fold invention competition. So now it is time for you to get creative and come up with some great fold ideas. Here are the rules:

1) Email me a video, blog post, or written tutorial (with pictures) at paddedtushstats@gmail.com. I will post the folds as they come in. I will take fold ideas until Sunday, May 29th at 11:59pm (I can extend it if you guys want).

2) I will then open the “polls". Viewers could go in and vote for the fold that they think works best. Polls will be open until Sunday, June 5th at 11:59pm

The best part is….drumroll please….the winner will receive a Bamboo Flat, courtesy of Zabi Baby!

You can enter a maximum number of THREE times (three different tutorials)

So if you see someone who has a great tutorial, go ahead and coax them into submitting their tutorial for the competition.

Need some inspiration? Head on over to this post to see a list of fold tutorials.

You can also fill out this survey on folds we already know about to put in your opinion. Folds will then get “scores” to go in our Master Flat Fold table.

HAVE FUN!

Flat Fold Survey

Master Flat Fold Table

I am having so much fun trying out new flat folds. How about you? I was hoping I could get your help on this project I am working on. Here is a list of folds I have found with tutorials. If you want to, go ahead and try a few out and let me know how you feel about the fold by filling out the survey found here.
If there are more flat fold tutorials that you know about for a different fold, let me know. Also, I am currently running a FLAT FOLD INVENTION competition and the winner gets a Zabi Babi Bamboo Flat. I am hoping this will turn into a very helpful table for flat addicts. Happy folding!
If you see a correction I need to make in # layers or where maximum layers is located, let me know.
Diaper Fold # of layers* Where maximum # of layers is located Score
Diaper Bag Fold 12 Front
Origami Fold 8 Same throughout
Kite Fold 4 Front
Pad Fold 12 Same throughout
Airplane Fold 16 Front
Bat Fold 8 Same throughout
Maria’s fold for boys 6 Front
Neat Fold 4 Same throughout
Jo’s Fold 6 Same throughout
Gaynor’s Fold for Girls 9 Middle
Twist Fold 6 Middle
Ro Fold 8 Front
Corners Fold 5 Front
Triangle Fold 2 Same throughout
V Fold 6 Middle
* In the videos for many of these a very large flat was used and folded into fours. From what I understand, a lot of the flats we have sold in the US are smaller, which means we could probably fold each side in by about a few inches and that would give extra layers, but overall the number of layers would be fewer than that shown in the video.

I am always anxious to try new flat folds now. I found a great tutorial at Diaper Swappers and I had to show it to you via video post! Check it out and let me know what you think:

Flats and Handwashing Challenge–Day 4–WincoBUNZ

[This is a part of the Flats and Handwashing Challenge Series. To read more of my posts on this, see a list here. To see the Dirty Diaper Laundry Flats and Handwashing Challenge series, go here.]

Today started off in a rush. I had to leave the house in a hurry to head out to my Grandparents house and I forgot my wet bag with half of my stash of diapers! The good news is I am here at the top of a hill that overlooks the valley and a nice breeze comes right up to greet my diapers.

See the diapers enjoying the view:

I asked my Grandma if I could use her bathtub to wash the diapers, but she insisted I use her laundry sink. SO MUCH EASIER! Wow! I washed diapers twice today and didn’t mind at all. I liked that I didn’t have to worry about leaving a bathroom door open and risking a baby falling into a bathtub filled with water. I think at home I want to use a bucket or storage bin now. And I didn’t use a plunger, I just put on my fancy rubber gloves and I felt like it made my diapers cleaner. I could pull out each diaper individually to make sure it isn’t clumped up into a padfold or anything. So nice! They dried so quickly in the breeze:

But the cover problem was a big issue. The youngest had plenty, but the oldest only had two and OF COURSE she had two poops in a row (when she normally poops once a day—I bet one day she’ll love that I share her BM schedule with the world). So I had no cover. I tried putting my EXTRA SMALL Thirsties cover on my 24 pound daughter…obviously it leaked. So finally I created a new brand of diaper:

I put a Winco shopping bag on her! I just made some holes and put it on.  Worked like a charm!

That picture just makes me want to roll on the floor laughing! When she walked she went *swish swish swish*!

I also enjoyed swapping flat folds with my Gma. She did a version of the Kite Fold. She talked about how when she was younger they made diapers out of Chicken Feed Sacks. She said they actually came in different prints. She also said her dresses were made of Chicken Feed Sacks as well and my great grandfather would always come home with sacks with matching prints so they could use multiple bags to make one dress. Interesting! I love how this challenge has helped me learn a little bit of information on my family.
I enjoyed chatting with her and also showing her the Diaper Bag Fold:

One of the things that amazes me is how these stand up at night. I padfold a flat inside of a flat that is in the Diaper Bag fold and I get a leak free night for my heavy wetter! I crack up because I have thick diapers that always hold the stink and are a pain to strip. I think I might stick with these flats for overnight.

Flats Challenge - Day 3 - Almost Caving In

[This is a part of the Flats and Handwashing Challenge Series. To read more of my posts on this, see a list here. To see the Dirty Diaper Laundry Flats and Handwashing Challenge series, go here.]

Today was it, do or die day. The true test of me taking this challenge. Even though I wrung out flats for an hour last night, they were still wet this morning. I put the diapers in front of a fan for five hours and they got a little better, but not much. Kids were put in nearly dry diapers all day.

And the day quickly got worse. The oldest turned into McGuyver and suddenly mastered child safety locks (oh boy), she found her plate of food that I hadn’t put away yet (was feeding the little one) and she threw the plate of stuffed bell peppers ALL over the floor, she took my water that was next to me (I went to change little guy’s diaper for the umpteenth time) and spilled it everywhere and my box of pita chips was emptied on the floor. After returning to the room from changing ANOTHER diaper, she was RUNNING on the couch. Although I spent the day cuddling with both, reading books and singing, tickling and giggling it was matched by timeout after time out.

Finally, at 3pm, both kids went down for a much-needed nap. BUT when little guy awoke, I had absolutely NO diapers ready. I grabbed my prefold and went to change him. In my head I thought, “Well, a lot of people are doing this challenge for ONE kid. I guess that is what I will do” and “No one would ever know if I used this prefold just once.” But this thinking is not me. I really try to be honest and I couldn’t look at you guys in the electronic eyes if I went against this challenge. What do Moms do who have to be in this position?

So, I lay a towel on the floor and gave my little guy some “free time.” I even saw a little golden arch too, so that sheet will get washed! I washed another batch of diapers and this time I stepped on them in the bathtub for a while right before wringing them out. I found that shortened wringing out time. I also dug up another receiving blanket. I love this one and would rather not use it, but I would rather do that than cave in.

My batch of diapers is out on the patio to dry (so glad the rain cleared up!!!). They are hanging from my patio swing.

My covers, holding hands:

My GroVia got left out of the huddle. Don’t fly away!!!!

With crying babies and homework untouched and diapers to be washed, I have been thinking ‘Why am I doing this?’ over and over again. I loved the post at Dirty Diaper Laundry on why she is doing it and it is inspiration for me. I also love my readers, who have coached me throughout the day on what to do. “Use a fan” “Squeeze it between cloth!” and “Hang in there, Tara!” I am so grateful for this support.

I'll be honest. I didn't just want to give up on the challenge, I wanted to give up on the site altogether. An illness in the family has made me reassess my priorities. This site takes a lot of work and I never really know if I am helping people. It took the support of my mother, husband, and Kim at Dirty Diaper Laundry to encourage me to stick with doing this site, which I love. You may see less of me, but I am here to help!

Why am I doing this? Will people who can’t afford diapering really read this? WHY.AM.I.DOING.THIS? I am doing this not to convince someone to cloth diaper. I thought that was why I was doing it, but I am not. I am doing this to endure all of the troubles of diapers not drying in time, babies crying when diapers need to be washed, wringing and wringing so I can learn what to troubleshoot so someone else has it a little bit easier. I think of people stretched for time and money and I think they need a little break. So hopefully the things I learn this week will save them from dealing with stress.

Oprah quote from today: “Use your life to serve the world.” I am bad at service. I feel like between school and kids I have no time (lame excuse, I know). But maybe this project is my chance to help someone. I hope so.

On the note of service, I go to say bye to my amazing brother in law tonight who is leaving for Afghanistan. I wrote him a “Thank You for serving our country” card. I thought the clothespin on this card was fitting for this week!

Day 3 – Lessons
Step on diapers to dry
Ask for advice
Enjoy your kids, no matter how many diapers are damp

For those doing this challenge, why are you doing it? For those not, what do you do to serve others (don’t say “nothing,” we all do something!)?

Flats and Handwashing Challenge–Day 2–Drying Lessons Learned

[This is a part of the Flats and Handwashing Challenge Series. To read more of my posts on this, see a list here. To see the Dirty Diaper Laundry Flats and Handwashing Challenge series, go here.]

Things are going pretty well with the Flats and Handwashing challenge, but it hasn’t been without a few bumps. The night went pretty well. No leaks in the middle of the night, but man those kids were fussy all night (totally unrelated to their fluff). I had washed my diapers last night and hung them to dry, but they STILL weren’t done in the morning! I was so bummed! I think it is because of the drying rack I have. It prevents everything from laying flat…instead they look like a bunch of ghosts!

044

So anyway, I busted into my pretty receiving blankets and I was {this close} to having to bust into my Grandma’s Hand embroidered days of the week flour sack towels (I have lots of these and one set got a burn on one towels…so I would use that, but still, it would feel wrong!). I took the diapers that were on my drying rack and put them outside in the sun. I could go throughout the day and pick some dry ones, but they weren’t all dry until about 3pm. I felt like I was picking fruit off of a tree throughout the day (is it wrong to use food metaphors on things your kids poop in? If so, sorry)

For most of the day the kids were in receiving blankets, but I was so excited when my Swaddlebees were ready. Both kids were in Thirsties covers. My daughter was in a Happy Heiny’s cover, but the velcro was scratching her tummy so I took it off.

Today I tried to use the padfold for most of the day. I am not too sure I like this fold. It seemed to leak every time with my toddler. My little one did OK with this one.

I also experienced my first poop with the little one. He is supplemented with formula, so his poop was NOT, BY ANY STRETCH, dissolvable. It looks like clay, but fortunately it only happens once every several days. It took at least 10 minutes to clean out the diaper. But I gotta say, I bet dunk and swishers have CLEAN toilets. I know I can now see my reflection in mine! (I’ll spare you a picture).

When I washed the diapers, I decided this time to use two pins on the drying rack per diaper. I hope this works! I also had no room for everything, so covers I don’t need right away are draped over the tub. I hung receiving blankets on clothes hangers, but since they don’t fit flat across, I know they won’t dry in time. I also washed a few straggler diapers from before the challenge, so I have my beloved sposoeasys and Ragababes laid out on the bottom of the tub (but I won’t use these, I promise!).

See how two pins are holding one diaper?

Still looks like a bunch of ghosts!

009

One thing I LOVE about this challenge is that I don’t have unfolded diapers hanging around! In fact, they are out of sight in a wetbag, folded in a basket, or drying in the bathroom or outside.

I am loving my basket method (heck, I am loving that ONE diaper fits both!). So I assembled this little on the go basket so I can take it to whatever room I am in. I have:

*  2 Flats with the diaper bag fold stuffed with a cheap factory reject Orange GMD for naps for the older baby. If I had enough flats, I could have used a padfolded flats, but today it was slim pickins because of the drying. So I had to cave in and use a cheap “doubler".”

* Flats with the diaper bag fold, no insert

* 2 Snappys, if not in use

* Padfolded flats

* 2 covers for each child (I have more as backup!)

* 1 tube of CJ’s

014

(That isn’t a day’s supply, I just plan to fill it about twice a day as diapers are ready).

I bust through this in the middle of the night with the little one, and then when the older one wakes up I just grab a diaper and go. So easy! Then this goes with me in the living room in the daytime as I am folding laundry, playing with the kids, or chatting with you on facebook working on school.

Lessons Learned Today – Day 2

* Make sure diapers can really spread apart when drying

* Padfold works well for little baby, but diaper bag fold works better for older baby

* Have a stash basket so you can easily transport diapers between rooms

* I should probably have a bigger stash if I were to do this full time. I LOVE this post from Milk Bubbles Blog about someone doing all of this for free. If I did this full time I would probably use some of her great tips like using sheets! It would at least be nice to have a few backups for instances like this where stuff isn’t dried in time. OK and I will confess, my back is KILLING ME from wringing out diapers for (what felt like) an hour tonight. I would love to just do this every other day!
