Rainshine Designs Newborn Diaper–My Review

This is a diaper review and I was provided the diaper to review. This does not, however, affect my review of this diaper. I promise.

There we were, in the office of the lactation consultant for the bazillionth time. I get ready to strip down my boy to his diaper for his weight (a moment I am particularly and oddly excited about when I am anywhere in public because I like to see the shock people have when they see a cloth diaper), and as I unveil that fluffy bum, I see it--yup, once again, my Mom (who has helped take me to these appointments), has put him in his Rainshine newborn diaper again. Yes, she who doesn’t get why with all of our scientific advancements I cloth diaper. But when the unveiling of this diaper occurs, she proudly says to the Lactation Consultant: “Isn’t this so cute!?” '
My Mom constantly tells me that this is the cutest diaper in my stash and even she proudly displays it to the world.

I was given this trial version of the Rainshine Designs Newborn Diaper to test out for a while. When I got the diaper in the mail, I was taken aback by how well the diaper was put together. Even my husband noticed the high quality of the diaper. We both “aaaahd” over the adorable detail of Owls on the snaps. OK, fine, hubby just went “uh huh” when I pointed it out. But that’s a lot, coming from him!

Here is some information on this diaper:
The diaper has a PUL exterior.
I was provided two inserts.
One was a 70% bamboo/30% organic cotton fleece inner and 4 layer soaker.
I was also provided with a Zorb soaker that was quilted.

My verdict. I loved the bamboo/cotton fleece insert. I did not have a leak with this until he reached about ten and a half pounds. I liked to use this one during the day. At night, when he sleeps longer stretches, I prefer something like a fitted or a prefold to have absorbent fabric all over the place (although I am now pining after the Rainshine Design Stay Dry FITTED...did you read that right? A stay dry fitted. CRAZY).
Zorb and my baby didn’t work out. He had leaks. The leaks were odd. They weren’t up the back, but instead went right out of the bottom of the legs (where the crotch of the diaper is most narrow). It turns out Rainshine Designs will most likely not create an insert like this in the future, but they are considering a bamboo terry insert with this.

The fit of this diaper is fantastic. I feel that it is more trim than my Lil’ Joeys, but more absorbent for my baby. It is comparable in fit and absorbency to a GroVia newborn. My baby is about eleven pounds now and this diaper is starting to get a little too small for him (we are on the last snaps).
My #1 rule for a newborn diaper is that it needs to be absorbent as close to day one as possible. I think that neither a pregnant woman nor a mother to a newborn should be spending hours prepping a diaper. This was absorbent right off the bat. I also don’t think an average-sized baby should have to grow into a newborn diaper. This fit my 7 pound baby very well with no leaks out the legs. I cannot speak for whether or not this avoids the umbilical cord stump well (baby JD lost his on DAY FOUR!), but it does have a low rise. I also like that it has snaps so it wouldn’t rub up against an umbilical cord as much as scratchy velcro would.
If you are looking for a TRIM newborn diaper, you would definitely want to check out this diaper. Also, at the moment, this is BY FAR my favorite diaper to take places to show off how cute cloth diapers are.

  2. I've never heard of these. But I will definitely be putting it on my "newborn stash" list, and getting one before my next is born.

    Thanks for the review!
